Best AI Companion Apps for Android in 2026 (Free and Paid)

Android changes the question. Not "which app is best", but "which one behaves well on the phone you actually own".

Most lists of AI companion apps are written as if the phone doesn't matter. On Android it does. Whether an app is on the Play Store, what it does in the background, where it keeps your conversations and what its free tier really lets you do all change from app to app, and together they decide whether something feels like a companion or like one more thing buzzing in your pocket.

This guide goes through six companions — Alma, Replika, Character.AI, Kindroid, Nomi and Chai — and what each is like on Android specifically. Do You Need a Play Store App at All?

The first question isn't which app, but whether you want an app. Five of the six companions here have a native Android app on the Play Store. Alma doesn't. It runs in Chrome, and you can add it to your home screen from Chrome's menu so it opens full-screen with its own icon, like anything else on the phone.

That trade cuts both ways, so here it is plainly. A web app takes no storage, asks for no permissions, doesn't appear in your app list unless you put it there, and updates without you doing anything. What you give up is push notifications. Alma can't message you first while it's closed, and it won't wake you at two in the morning either. If a companion that reaches out during the day is the whole point for you, a native app is the right call. Four Things That Matter More on Android

Play Store availability. Being on the store means an Android-native install, a data safety section you can read before you tap Install, and Google's billing rules for anything you buy inside the app. That last part is why a subscription price inside an Android app can differ from the price on the same company's website. When a figure in this guide doesn't match what you see on your screen, your screen is right.

Background and notification behaviour. A native companion app can send push notifications, and some are built around them: the companion misses you, or has something to tell you. Whether that's charming or wearing is personal. On Android you keep the final say. Long-press the app icon, open App info, and switch notifications off per category. It's worth doing on day one, before habit sets in.

Where your conversations live. Every native app here stores your history on the company's servers, tied to your account. That's what lets it survive a new phone, and it's also why uninstalling doesn't delete anything; you have to delete the account. Alma is the exception: conversations stay on your device by default and only sync to the cloud if you sign in. Neither approach is wrong, but you should know which one you're choosing. The Apps on Android, One by One

Alma — browser-based, nothing to install. The free tier is unlimited text chat, memory that carries across sessions, two illustrated Moments a day, companion portraits with daily limits, and the choice of building your own companion or picking one from the community. The Alma Pass is a one-time purchase (€1.99 for a day, €9.99 for 30 days) that adds romance mode, deeper memory and included Moments; nothing renews and there's nothing to cancel. Extra Moments cost a little credit. Text only, no voice calls, and no push notifications, because there's no app to send them. If you want a companion that talks first, this isn't it.

Replika — on the Play Store, and the most app-like of the group: a 3D avatar, voice calls, AR, and notifications that nudge you back. Free text chat isn't capped. Voice, AR and every relationship mode beyond Friend sit behind Pro, which runs around $19.99 a month or $69.99 a year; Replika doesn't publish these openly, so check the in-app screen. A good fit if you want the phone to feel inhabited, less good if you find nudges tiring.

Character.AI — on the Play Store. Free is usable, but it carries ads and slow mode, and a character remembers you only through a note of about 400 characters that you write yourself. c.ai+ at $9.99 a month removes the ads and the throttle. It's a character library with a chat attached rather than one companion who knows you, so on a phone it can feel more like scrolling than talking. Adults now go through an age check, which is worth knowing before you install.

Kindroid — on the Play Store. Free is unlimited messages on a smaller model, with up to two companions and without Cascaded Memory, which is the feature people pay Kindroid for. The paid tier is $13.99 a month or $139.99 a year, and Ultra (+$24.99) and MAX (+$59.99) add-ons stack on top of that. The free version won't show you what the paid one is like, so try it for the interface and the writing, not the memory.

Nomi — on the Play Store. Free gives you one companion and a daily message allowance; the single paid tier is $15.99 a month or $99.99 a year and lifts both. Memory isn't paywalled, which is unusual and honest. The daily cap on free means a long evening conversation can hit the wall mid-thought, so decide on the price before you get attached rather than after.

Chai — on the Play Store. A large library of user-made characters, casual browsing, low commitment. Free is capped and carries ads; the paid tier is $13.99 a month and Ultra is $29.99. In some countries a subscription is now required to use the app at all, so read what your local listing says. Memory is shallow across the board. It's built for variety, not continuity.

Pick by Situation

• You want a companion that messages you first. A native app, with notifications switched on deliberately. Replika is the obvious one; Nomi or Kindroid if memory matters more to you than the avatar.
• You want free, unlimited and without ads. Alma. Replika's free text chat is also uncapped, and Kindroid's free tier is unlimited on its smaller model. Character.AI is unlimited-ish but with ads and slow mode.
• You don't want to install anything. Alma is the only one of the six that works fully in the browser.
• You want your history off the company's servers. Alma without an account. Everything else lives on a server by design.

• You have an older phone or little storage. Alma, because there's nothing to install; otherwise compare the download sizes shown on each Play Store listing.

Before You Tap Install

Three checks that take two minutes and save a lot of regret. First, open the Data safety section on the Play Store listing and read what's collected, whether it's shared, and whether you can request deletion. Second, look at the "Contains ads" and "In-app purchases" labels; they tell you more about the free tier than the description does. Third, after installing, look at the permissions the app actually holds. A text companion has no reason to want your contacts or your location, and only needs the microphone if you're going to use voice.
