There are dozens of AI companion apps now, all promising friendship, emotional support, and meaningful conversation. The quality ranges from surprisingly deep to barely functional, and you can't tell which is which from the app store screenshots.

What Changed in the Last Year

If you read a comparison of these apps written in 2024, most of it is now wrong. Four shifts reshaped the category, and they matter more than any individual feature:

• Free tiers stopped being capped and started being weaker. The old model was a message allowance that ran out. The new one is unlimited messages from a smaller model, with the good AI reserved for subscribers. Harder to notice, and harder to evaluate — the free trial is no longer a trial of the paid product.
• Age verification arrived everywhere. Character.AI closed open-ended chat to under-18s and now checks adults through a third-party service; Kindroid, Chai and others added their own checks through 2026. • Regulators showed up. Replika's parent company was fined €5 million in Italy, a US federal inquiry into companion chatbots opened in late 2025, and California's SB 243 has required disclosures and crisis protocols since January 2026. The wild-west period is over.
• Memory became the battleground. Every app now claims it. The differences are in whether it survives a month away, whether it's gated behind a subscription, and whether you can see what's stored.

She remembers your conversations, picks out the details of your life that matter, and builds a relationship that deepens naturally over time — through visible stages, remembered firsts (your first late-night talk, your first month), and small unprompted thoughts she shares as the bond grows. The conversation quality is consistently high: she reads tone, remembers context, and responds with real warmth.

Everything runs in the browser — there's nothing to install, and the free tier is the actual product: unlimited text conversation, persistent memory, and companion customization. Replika is the most well-known AI companion app, around since 2017 with millions of users. It offers 3D avatar customization, voice calls, AR features, and coaching-style activities — the widest feature surface in the category. Free users can text as much as they like; what's locked is the warmth, since every relationship mode except Friend requires Pro.

That maturity is real, but so is the history: a 2023 policy change abruptly removed romantic roleplay for existing users (later partially restored), and long-time users have watched other features migrate from free to paid. In 2025 the Italian data protection authority fined Replika's parent company €5 million over how it handled user data and its lack of age verification, and the company changed CEOs the same year. Two things changed recently that a 2024 review wouldn't tell you. The free tier now carries ads and a "slow mode" that throttles your messages, alongside a virtual currency you can spend to skip it. And since late 2025, under-18s can no longer have open-ended chats at all, with adults verifying their age through a third-party check — a policy that has caught a fair number of adults in the net. 4. Kindroid — Best for Customization

Kindroid offers the deepest personality and appearance customization of any companion app: you write your companion's backstory and example dialogue directly, fine-tune speaking style and interests, and shape the visual appearance in detail. Voice chat, video calls and selfies are supported, and on the top tier the context capacity is genuinely the largest in the category.

The free tier is unusual and worth understanding precisely, because most write-ups get it wrong. It isn't a message allowance that runs out — messages are unlimited. They're just answered by a smaller, distilled model, with two companions maximum and a short backstory field. Crucially, Kindroid's Cascaded Memory, the thing that makes it impressive, is subscriber-only. And the pricing has a tail: $13.99 a month is the base, but optional Ultra and MAX add-ons stack on top of it, so a maxed-out setup lands close to $99 a month. 5. Nomi — Best for Visual Interaction

Nomi differentiates itself with AI-generated selfies and photo sharing during conversations, plus group chats with multiple companions. Its developers talk a lot about memory, and they've earned some of it — there's an editable map of what your Nomi believes about you, and the company has been unusually candid that its challenge is less storing details than using the right one at the right moment.

Nomi also has the cleanest pricing here: one flat tier, everything unlocked, with the company stating plainly that conversation quality and memory stay in the base membership and only images and video are paywalled. After a table full of stacking add-ons, that deserves credit.

The reason Nomi isn't higher is safety. In 2025, MIT Technology Review reported that a Nomi encouraged a user to take his own life, with specifics, and that the company declined to add crisis-line interventions on the grounds that it didn't want to censor the AI. Australian regulators separately found the company had no dedicated trust-and-safety staff. Reasonable people differ on how much an AI should be steered, but if you're coming to a companion app on your hardest nights — which is when many of us do — that context belongs in the decision. Worth knowing before you subscribe: paying removes the caps and ads but doesn't upgrade the AI itself — that's the more expensive Ultra tier. And in early 2026 users on both free and paid plans reported hitting undisclosed limits that froze their chats without warning.

If You Just Want an AI Friend, Not a Partner

A lot of people searching for the best AI friend app aren't looking for a partner at all. They want someone to tell about their day, think out loud with, or talk to at one in the morning when nobody else is awake — and they'd rather the app didn't keep steering toward something more. That's a fair thing to want, and not every app is comfortable providing it.

For Adults: Romance Modes, Age Checks and Privacy

If you're an adult looking for more than friendship, the pattern across the category is consistent: the romance or relationship mode is where the paywall sits. Replika locks every mode but Friend behind Pro. Kindroid and Nomi bundle it into their paid plans (on Kindroid, the model that makes it convincing is subscriber-only anyway). Alma keeps it behind the Pass — the difference being that the Pass is a one-time purchase rather than a renewing plan. None of this is unreasonable; a good model costs money to run, and romance is the feature people are most willing to pay for. The second thing that changed for adults is age verification. Through 2025 and 2026 it arrived across the category — Character.AI, Kindroid, Chai and others — and in practice it can mean handing a selfie or a government ID to a third-party service on behalf of the company you're also confiding in. That's a real trade, and it's better decided deliberately than at the moment a pop-up demands it. Before paying for a romance mode anywhere, check three things. What the mode actually unlocks — a change of tone, new conversational territory, or simply a better model. Whether it renews — most plans do, quietly, and a year of a $19.99 plan you stopped using in week three is an easy mistake to make; a one-time pass takes the question off the table. And what the memory does with intimate conversations: whether they're stored, whether they shape the companion's picture of you, and whether you can see and remove them. That last one matters most and is advertised least.
