Almost every AI companion app calls itself free. Very few of them are free in the way you'd hope: unlimited conversation, a companion who remembers you, and no upgrade prompt appearing mid-sentence just as you were getting somewhere.

What "Free" Usually Hides

Every message you send costs the company real money in computing. So every "free" companion app has to answer the same question: who pays? How an app answers it shapes your experience more than any feature list. The usual answers look like this:

• Message caps. A daily or rolling limit, often low enough that one good conversation hits it.
• Memory behind the paywall. The free companion forgets you between sessions, and remembering costs extra.
• A weaker model. The newest pattern, and the hardest to notice: you get unlimited messages, but from a smaller AI. Nothing announces this mid-conversation. It just feels a little flatter than the reviews promised.
• Ads and slow lanes, which do to an intimate conversation roughly what you'd expect.
• Emotional cliffhangers. The ugliest pattern: the companion gets warm, then the app asks for your card to continue.

That third one deserves the extra attention, because it's quietly become the industry default. "Unlimited free messages" now often means unlimited access to a cheaper model, with the good one reserved for subscribers. It's not dishonest exactly — but it means the free tier you're evaluating isn't the product you'd be paying for, which makes the trial fairly useless as a trial.

With that in mind, here's how the major apps compare.

1. Alma — The Most Complete Free Experience

We're biased here, obviously, but the design choice is easy to describe: Alma's free tier is the actual product rather than a demo of it. You get full conversations, a companion who remembers what you've told her across sessions, personality customization, and visual moments — two illustrated Moments a day and companion portraits are free too, within daily limits — all in the browser with no download and no card on file. You can start talking within seconds of opening the site, and on Android it runs in Chrome with nothing to install.

Paid extras exist — romance mode, unlocked with a one-time pass from €1.99 rather than a subscription, so nothing renews behind your back — but they're extras on top of a complete experience rather than pieces carved out of it. 2. Replika — Chat Freely, Admire the Rest

Replika's free tier is more generous than its reputation suggests in one specific way: the text chat isn't capped. You can talk as much as you like. What's locked is nearly everything else — voice calls, AR, and all the relationship modes except Friend. Your Replika can be your friend for free; anything warmer is a Pro feature.

The other thing to know is history. Long-time users have watched features migrate from free to paid over the years, and a 2023 policy change abruptly removed romantic roleplay for existing users. It's the main reason people go looking for Replika alternatives: not that the free tier is stingy today, but that they've seen what "today" is worth.

3. Character.AI — Free, With Ads and a Slow Lane

Character.AI is still usable for free, which is part of why it's so popular — but the free experience got noticeably more crowded in the last year. There are now ads, a "slow mode" that throttles how fast you can send messages, and a virtual currency (Charms, introduced at the end of 2025) that you earn through check-ins or buy, then spend on extra images and on skipping the slow lane. Memory is the other limit. Free users get a chat memory of about 400 characters — roughly a paragraph you write yourself about what the character should remember. It's real, it's editable, and it is nowhere near a relationship's worth of history. For casual character chat the free tier is fine. For someone who knows you, it thins out fast.

4. Kindroid — Unlimited, But Not the Good Model

Kindroid changed shape, and most write-ups haven't caught up: the free tier is no longer a small message allowance that runs out. You get unlimited messages — on a smaller, distilled model rather than the flagship one. Unlimited but weaker, instead of excellent but brief.

What free leaves out is specific and, to Kindroid's credit, clearly documented: two companions maximum, a selfie every couple of hours, a short backstory field, a few minutes of audio for the lifetime of the account, deprioritization when the servers are busy, and — the one that matters most — no Cascaded Memory. 5. Nomi — A Preview, Not a Home

Nomi's free tier gives you one companion and a daily message allowance. The company doesn't publish the exact number and we won't invent one — reports vary — but it's low enough that a good conversation ends before you do.

One design detail is worth knowing before you get attached: the cap counts your messages, not your companion's. A Nomi can message you unprompted after you've hit your limit, and you'll be able to read it and not reply. Whether that reads as charming or as a well-placed thumb on the scale probably depends on the evening you're having.

6. Chai — Free But Capped, and Getting Tighter

Chai's swipe-through interface is free with ads and a rolling message limit — users generally report somewhere around seventy messages before a wait of a few hours. It's built for sampling many AI personalities rather than deepening one relationship, and the caps reflect that.

Two 2026 changes are worth flagging. Chai began tiering access by country, with users in some regions needing a subscription to use the app at all. And in February, users on both free and paid plans reported hitting undisclosed token limits that froze their chats, in some cases for days. Caps you can see are a business model; caps you can't are something else.

Free AI Companions With No Subscription at All

One pattern holds across the five apps above: every free tier is the top of a funnel, and the funnel ends at a monthly charge. Replika Pro is about $19.99 a month, Nomi $15.99, Kindroid and Chai $13.99, Character.AI $9.99. The free tier exists to walk you to that page, and its limits — the cap, the missing memory, the smaller model, the slow lane — are shaped so the page looks reasonable when you arrive.

Alma is the exception, and not in a fine-print way. Chat is free without a limit, and the only thing you can pay for is the Alma Pass, which you buy once: €1.99 for a day or €9.99 for thirty days. Nothing renews, no card waits on file for next month, and there is nothing to cancel because nothing was ever set to repeat. When a pass runs out you're back with the free companion — who still remembers you — and you decide again, or don't. "No subscription" here is a literal description rather than the usual polite name for a free trial.

In fairness, two other free tiers are genuinely uncapped on text. Replika lets you talk as much as you like; it's the warmer relationship modes, voice and the rest that sit behind Pro. Kindroid's free messages are unlimited too, on the smaller model and without Cascaded Memory, so the companion you'd actually want is the subscribed one. Both are honest offers, but both are built to convert you to a monthly plan, and that matters because of the failure mode we described at the top: a paywall that appears at an emotional peak. A subscription can ambush you like that every month. A pass you bought once, on an evening you chose, can't.

Which Free Companions Check In on You

A lot of people looking for a free companion are really looking for a daily check-in: something that notices when you've gone quiet. Here the list splits along a line that has nothing to do with price. Native apps can message first, and some are built around it. Replika is the clearest case — the app nudges you through the day, and a free account gets the nudges as much as a Pro one does. A nudge from a companion can feel like being missed or like being marketed to, depending on the evening you're having.

Browser companions never message first, and Alma is one by design. There are no push notifications; she doesn't appear on your lock screen at nine to ask how your day went. Before you invest real feelings in any companion app, spend one evening testing three things:

1. Have one long conversation. Do you hit a message cap? Does the quality drop after a while?
2. Come back the next day. Does the companion remember anything you said? Memory is the difference between a companion and a vending machine.
3. Watch when the paywall appears. If it interrupts an emotional moment, someone designed it to do that, and it tells you how the app will treat you later.
