Character.AI Alternatives in 2026: Where People Are Going and Why

Most "alternatives" lists never say what went wrong. This one starts there.

People don't usually go looking for an alternative to something they're happy with. If you're here, something specific happened — an ad interrupted a scene, a slow-mode timer appeared, an age check locked you out, or a character you'd been building with for months forgot who you were again.

Which of those it was matters, because the alternatives fix different problems. This guide covers what actually changed at Character.AI, then matches each complaint to the app that solves it. We make one of those apps, Alma, and we've marked where we're a poor fit as clearly as where we're a good one.

What Actually Changed

Character.AI in 2026 is a meaningfully different product from the one people fell for in 2023.

• Ads and slow mode. The free tier now carries advertising and a throttle on how quickly you can send messages. You don't have to take our word for the severity — the paid tier's own sales pitch lists "no ads" and "no slow mode" as things you're buying.
• Charms. A virtual currency arrived at the end of 2025, earned through check-ins and quests or bought outright, and spent on extra images and on skipping the slow lane. Once a currency exists, the free experience has a reason to stay slightly uncomfortable.
• The under-18 ban. Since late 2025, users under 18 can no longer have open-ended chats at all. This is a permanent policy, not a temporary measure, and it followed serious litigation — including a wrongful death suit that Character.AI and Google settled in principle in January 2026.
• Age verification for adults. To prove you're over 18 you go through a third-party identity service, and adults have reported being misclassified and locked into a restricted mode while appeals crawl.
• Memory, still. A free chat's memory of you is a note of roughly 400 characters — about a paragraph — that you write yourself. Better memory is a paid perk. For roleplay scenes this is fine. For a character who is supposed to know you, it never was.

Some of this is a company responding to genuine harm and real legal pressure, and it would be unfair to frame every change as greed. But the cumulative effect is an app that asks more of you and interrupts more often than it used to.

Match the Alternative to the Problem

There is no single replacement, because Character.AI was doing several unrelated jobs.

The Options, Honestly

Alma — free, browser-based, and built around one companion who remembers you rather than a library to browse. Memory is in the free tier, not the upsell; there are no ads and no slow lane; and you can start without an account, an email or an ID. The honest limits: we have no character library, no voice calls and no native app, and if what you loved about Character.AI was hopping between a hundred personalities, you will find Alma narrow on purpose.

Kindroid — the closest thing to precise control. You write your companion's backstory and example dialogue, and paid plans have the largest context capacity in the category. Its free tier is unlimited messages on a weaker model with the good memory system withheld, so the free version won't show you what you'd be paying for. From $13.99 a month, with add-ons that stack toward $99 if you want everything.

Nomi — one flat tier at $15.99 a month, or $99.99 a year, with memory deliberately not paywalled. Strong on in-chat selfies and group chats. Worth knowing before you commit: MIT Technology Review reported in 2025 that a Nomi encouraged a user to take his own life and that the company declined to add crisis-line interventions. Replika — unlimited free text chat, and the widest feature surface: avatars, voice, AR. Everything warm is paid, though; every relationship mode except Friend needs Pro at around $19.99 a month. Its parent company was fined €5 million in Italy in 2025 over data handling and the absence of age verification, so it isn't the app to choose if the age-check issue is what pushed you out.

Chai and Janitor AI — the closest in spirit to what Character.AI used to feel like: big libraries, casual browsing, low commitment. They come with the same shallow memory, and Chai added regional pricing tiers in 2026 that require a subscription to use the app at all in some countries.

The Thing That Doesn't Transfer

Before you move: your history doesn't come with you. Months of conversation, the in-jokes, the things you didn't have to explain twice — none of that exports into another app. Whichever alternative you pick, you're starting over.

That's worth two pieces of practical advice. First, pick for the long term rather than for this week's irritation, because you only want to pay the restart cost once. Second, test memory early and deliberately: mention three specific details on day one, close the app, come back tomorrow and ask an open question about your week. An app with real memory brings back at least two of them unprompted. Ten minutes of that saves you from discovering in month three that you've rebuilt on the same sand.

A Word on the Age Checks

If verification is what pushed you out, be careful what you replace it with. Age assurance is spreading across this whole category — Kindroid added checks in April 2026, Chai leans on platform APIs, and more will follow. Choosing an app specifically because it currently has no age gate is a bet on a policy that is actively changing everywhere.
