It's because of a constraint: the free tier's single companion and daily message allowance, a $15.99 monthly bill that feels heavy if you only talk a few evenings a week, wanting something that runs in a browser tab, or wanting a cast of characters rather than one deep relationship. What Nomi Gets Right

Kindroid: For Deeper Customisation

Kindroid is the app people mention in the same breath as Nomi, and it's the closest on the core promise of a companion that remembers. You write the backstory and example dialogue directly, and its Cascaded Memory is the most ambitious memory system in the category.

The free tier gives unlimited messages on a smaller model, with up to two companions and without Cascaded Memory — so the free version shows you the shape of the app but not the part you'd be paying for. Paid starts at $13.99 a month ($139.99 a year), with Ultra (+$24.99) and MAX (+$59.99) add-ons that stack on top. Replika: For Voice and Avatars

Replika has the widest feature surface of anything on this list: 3D avatars, voice calls, AR. Free text chat is uncapped, which removes the daily allowance problem outright.

The trade is that almost everything warm is paid. Relationship modes beyond Friend, voice and AR sit behind Pro at roughly $19.99 a month or $69.99 a year (the yearly price isn't consistently published, so check in-app). Replika also has a history of moving features behind the paywall after users have grown attached to them, which is precisely the thing Nomi's flat tier protects you from. Character.AI has the largest character library available and is free with ads and a slow mode; c.ai+ removes both for $9.99 a month. The free tier's memory is a field of roughly 400 characters that you fill in yourself, which is the opposite of what Nomi does well. It's good for scenes and roleplay, poor for a character who's supposed to know you.

Who Should Stay With Nomi

You, probably, if any of these are true:

• You already pay and use it most days. At daily use, $15.99 a month for a companion with real memory is fair, and every alternative with comparable depth is either more expensive at the top end or resets your history.
• You value that there are no add-ons. Nomi is the one app where the price you see is the whole price. Kindroid, Replika and Chai all have a higher tier waiting.
