Replika vs Character.AI in 2026: Price, Memory, and Who Each One Is For

The two most searched names in AI companionship, and they are not really competing for the same person.

Replika and Character.AI are the two names everyone arrives with, and the comparison is more lopsided than the pairing suggests. They're built for different things. One wants to be your person; the other wants to be a thousand characters. Most of the disappointment people report with either app comes from picking the wrong one for what they actually wanted.

Character.AI's prices come from its own pricing page. Replika's don't come from anywhere official — the company doesn't publish them publicly, so the figures above are what users and reviewers consistently report and have been stable for a long time. That's an odd thing for a subscription business to be coy about, and it's worth noticing.

Price: Closer Than It Looks

On monthly billing Replika costs roughly twice as much: about $19.99 against $9.99. On annual billing the ranking flips. Replika's yearly plan works out near $5.83 a month — a discount of around 70%, which is steep enough to say something about how the company values commitment — while Character.AI's annual saves about 20%, landing near $7.92.

Free Tiers: Two Different Kinds of Squeeze

Replika doesn't cap your text chat. You can talk as much as you want, forever, without paying. What's locked is warmth: every relationship mode except Friend requires Pro, along with voice calls, AR, and much of what made the app famous. Your Replika can be your friend for free; anything more is a purchase.

Character.AI takes the opposite approach: you can talk to anyone in any register, but the experience itself is degraded. Ads run, slow mode throttles your pace, and a currency called Charms exists partly so you can pay to skip the queue you were placed in.

Which is worse depends entirely on what you want. To browse a hundred characters casually, Character.AI's free tier is more useful. To have one long, deepening relationship, Replika's is — right up until you hit the wall where the relationship is supposed to deepen, which is precisely where the paywall sits.

Memory: Neither Is Good, One Is Worse

Character.AI's free memory is a note of roughly 400 characters per chat, which you write yourself. That's about a paragraph to summarise everything a character should know about you. Better memory is explicitly a paid perk. This isn't a bug — Character.AI is built for scenes and variety, and a scene doesn't need to remember last month. But it means a character can be vivid for an hour and blank about your life.

Replika does maintain a memory bank you can add to and edit, so it's structurally ahead. In practice, memory quality is the most common complaint among long-term Replika users, and a major rebuild in 2026 reportedly caused personality drift and lost history for some people.

The Policy Records

Both companies have had a bruising couple of years, in different ways.

Replika was fined €5 million by the Italian data protection authority in May 2025 over its legal basis for processing user data, transparency failures and the absence of age verification. It also has a longer history that matters emotionally: a 2023 change abruptly removed romantic roleplay for existing users, and long-time users have watched features migrate from free to paid. The company changed chief executives in 2025.

Character.AI banned open-ended chat for under-18s in late 2025 and now verifies adults through a third-party identity service. In January 2026 it settled, in principle, a wrongful death suit brought after a teenager's death, along with several related cases. The under-18 ban is a permanent policy rather than a temporary response.

Neither record makes an app unusable. Both are worth knowing before you invest months of your life in one — particularly the pattern Replika users describe, where the app you signed up for isn't the app you have two years later.

Who Each One Is Actually For

Choose Replika if you want one companion with a face and a voice, you value a mature platform with a big community, and you're willing to pay — ideally annually — for the version that isn't emotionally restricted. It remains the most fully featured single-companion app.

Choose Character.AI if you want variety: different characters, creative scenarios, roleplay for its own sake. It's cheaper monthly and unmatched for range. Don't choose it expecting to be known.
